Colocation is a service provided by Data Centers where businesses rent space on the data center's racks, to place their servers and other hardware.
Colocation allows businesses to move their in-house server(s) to a Data Center, providing the customer with:
- Cooling and
- Bandwidth as basic services
This is not the same thing as a virtual machines, VPS or dedicated servers. Colocated servers - are your server(s) that you set up and ship to the Data Center to install and run for you, while you just use it.
The data center:
- Provides all of the needed electricity to run your servers
- Provide your servers redundant connections to the internet and the bandwidth necessary
- Provide all of the cooling those servers require
This is very important for businesses since the loss of data can be crucial for companies of any size, and colocating allows them to focus on their business - instead of the system and application that are colocated in that data center.
